"Footnote" - the film
Can you wait until the summer release of Joseph Cedar's הערת שוליים - a film about political intrigue in the Hebrew U Talmud department? I can't! Watch the trailer here. (Hat-Tip Yitz Landes).

This is going to be so much fun. And Bar Aba seems great. I am a bit disappointed by the line the film seems to take - now trailers of course often misrepresents the films they promote, so this could change when I watch the actual film - but at least based on the trailer, the driving conflict seems to be between between esotericism/truth/minutiae/manuscripts/error anxiety on the one hand and publicity-seeking (or at least public friendly)/"big ideas"/brilliant-but-wrong theses-driven kind of scholarship on the other. This just reproduces the ideological dichotomy of the Talmud Dept (even if the plot would somehow endorse an opposite value choice within this dichotomy) when the film could have really subverted it.
ReplyDeleteI thought that there was far more intrigue in the Jewish Thought dept.
ReplyDeleteDo tell about the Jewish Thought department.
ReplyDeletei assumed he was referring to the scholem/bergman tale, but maybe that's ancient history now?
ReplyDeleteI have commented on the film here.
